At the recent Governor’s Academy of Motion Picture Arts Awards, Tom Cruise received an honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. In his speech, the actor recalled his first steps into cinema and how his passion for creativity defined his entire career. Academy President Janet Young noted not only Cruise’s dedication to cinema, but also his contribution to supporting the industry during the pandemic.
Other laureates include Dolly Parton, who received an award for humanitarian work. Although the singer was unable to attend in person due to health problems, Lily Tomlin warmly presented her achievements: the Dollywood Foundation, a book donation program, and assistance in Covid-19 vaccine research.
Honorary Oscars were also awarded to Wynn Thomas and Debbie Allen. Thomas was recognized for the artistic design of films and his contribution to the representation of black lives in cinema, while Allen was recognized for his multifaceted career in acting, choreography and directing. Octavia Spencer and Cynthia Erivo emphasized their perseverance and belief in a dream that inspired new generations.
Concluding the ceremony, Tom Cruise noted that for him, cinema is not just a profession, but a way of life. He emphasized the power of films in bringing people together and the opportunity to reveal human community through art.
