Life sometimes feels like everything is going wrong. A few bad days led me to the very meeting that changed everything. One day, the printer in the library broke down, and that was the beginning of my acquaintance with Jack.
my name is Anna. Jack didn’t stand out for his ostentatious generosity or loudness. He had a quiet confidence and a rare tolerance that attracted people. I didn’t expect anything special, but one day in a cafe everything turned out differently.
The printer mocked me: it printed pages with errors and got stuck. A tall guy with a messy hairstyle appeared in the queue. He sat down next to her, pressed a couple of buttons, and the printer started working again. He said he works in IT, and we exchanged numbers. Coffee turned into dinners, dinners into dates. Jack was attentive to the little things: he brought his favorite pastries, walked me home in the rain, fixed my laptop, without devaluing my mistakes.
Three months later, he booked a table at an expensive restaurant. The importance of the moment was obvious to us. At dinner, everything went smoothly until three women in expensive outfits at the next table started laughing and mocking the young waitress. One of them contemptuously noticed the smell, the second pointed to worn shoes, the third mocked her possible income. The waitress blushed, she couldn’t answer in any way. There was silence in the hall, no one intervened.
Jack calmly pushed back his chair and walked over to their table. His voice was steady but firm. He directly pointed out the cruelty of their words, emphasizing that it is unacceptable to humiliate a working person. The women were confused. Their taunts immediately died down.
The men at the neighboring tables came to the waitress’s defense one by one. The applause filled the hall, and the atmosphere completely changed. The manager, having listened to the situation, coldly told the women that their food was on the house, but they were no longer welcome here. They left without finding support.
Jack returned and said he would go talk to the manager so that the waitress would not be punished or fired. He did it calmly and conscientiously. The manager promised that the girl would keep her job. Her relieved face and quiet “thank you” made me feel proud and deeply grateful to Jack.
That evening, I saw in him not only a man who knows how to defend justice with words, but also a man of action — someone who does not limit himself to demonstrating principles, but brings them to the end. Under the soft light of the restaurant, the idea that everything had changed was ingrained in me forever.
