I fed a hungry veteran and his dog, and I was fired a month later, but my life changed for the better.

I am a single mom who works in a small insurance office, and I always rush home to my children. One evening, while carrying groceries from the store, I noticed a man with a large dog on the side of the road: he looked tired and hungry, and the dog was well—groomed and devoted. Without hesitation, I went back to the store and bought a hot meal for him and a large pack of dog food.

When I returned the packages, the man was crying with gratitude: he said that he had served in the army and that a simple lunch had given him back the feeling that he was not invisible. His words sunk into my soul, I wished him well and went home, not knowing what it would lead to. A month later, I almost forgot this episode — life with work and children swallowed up all thoughts.

Suddenly, my boss called me into his office and handed me a letter from the veterans’ organization praising me and recommending me for a promotion. But instead of thanking me, he accused me of staging and fired me with the wording that I was allegedly undermining his authority. I was shocked: it seemed to me that I had only acted like a human being, and then there was dismissal and fear for the future of the children.

I called the organization and went to a meeting with them. It turned out that after that meeting in the store, the veteran turned to them: the help he received gave him the strength to come for support. The organization helped him with treatment and housing, and sent me a letter in gratitude. When they found out about my dismissal, they decided to step in and offered legal assistance for free.

Two months of fighting in court ended with my rehabilitation: I was reinstated, my boss was suspended, and I received compensation for my forced downtime. But more importantly, the organization offered me a job where I could help veterans and their families. I agreed: now my work is not only about survival, but also about meaning and helping those who really need it.

This story shows how one small kindness can change the fate of several people.
