The fire started suddenly — the wiring caught fire in an old house on the outskirts of town.
Neighbors ran out into the street, someone had already called the emergency services.
Emma, a young woman in her thirties, stood on the sidewalk, trembling with horror.
But suddenly she heard a thin, desperate squeak.
“There are puppies in there!” she cried and rushed forward.
A neighbor tried to hold her back, but she broke free and ran into the house, which was already filled with thick smoke.

The puppies were saved. Emma was too, although the doctors later said that a few more seconds and it would have been too late.
Later, in the hospital, she was shown the puppies — alive, warm, sleeping in a blanket.
She smiled and whispered:
“The main thing is that they’re home.”
