Joe and Helen Auer from Ohio lived a real-life fairy tale together. During their 73 years of marriage, the couple raised ten children, became grandparents, then great-grandparents, saw their grandchildren, and even waited for their first great-great-grandchild. Their story began in 1941 at St. Lawrence Church in Cincinnati, where they exchanged vows and have since overcome all of life’s trials together.
The family faced many difficulties: Joe went to war in Europe when Helen was expecting their second child, and financial worries and personal losses tested their resilience. But, according to their children, the couple always supported each other, found reasons to laugh, and cherished every moment together. They were proud of their family, and their love and mutual respect helped them overcome differences and remain close.

When Helen passed away at the age of 94, Joe could not live without her and died just over a day later. His children knew that their father would not be able to bear being separated from his beloved wife. A few months earlier, he had celebrated his 100th birthday. The couple’s funeral was held in the same church where their life together had begun, symbolically and touchingly ending a long and happy love story.
