The last time Daniel Carter saw his ex-wife was at the door of their small house, where she was holding two crying newborns and a pile of unpaid bills. He remembered the weariness in her eyes and the silence he had mistaken for weakness. He’s gone.
In the cafe behind the bar, Elena was waiting for coffee when she heard his voice. Daniel was standing in an expensive suit, with a smug smile, next to him was his new wife Vanessa in sunglasses. He made snide remarks about her life with the children and how difficult it was for her. Elena answered calmly and left, not allowing herself to be upset.
Daniel left home when the twins were three months old. He told himself that the job and freedom offered were more important than family life. Soon he had a new apartment, a new job, and a new woman. Elena was left alone with two babies, without savings and without support. She worked nights, studied online between feedings, and learned to live anew for the sake of the children. There were tears and sleepless nights, but she didn’t stop fighting.
A week after the meeting at the cafe, Daniel saw Elena again at the airport’s private terminal. Against the backdrop of a luxurious airplane, she walked along the red carpet in an elegant dress, holding hands with two children about five years old, confident and joyful. Daniel recognized them as his twins and was stunned. The accompanying staff called her Miss Hayes, CEO of the Hayes Consulting Group. The news hit him hard. Elena calmly confirmed this and, looking at the children, said that she was building their lives while he was building his own.
Daniel, stunned, asked if the children knew him. Elena honestly replied that she did not. This truth hit harder than all the reproaches. He realized the price of his choices: external achievements and image, for all their fleetness, do not compensate for the lost family moments.
The children cheerfully pulled Elena by the hand, asking her to sit down at the window of the plane as soon as possible. She smiled and, without showing malice, wished Daniel to find what he was looking for. Then they went up the ramp, the door closed, the engines started, and the plane took off. Daniel was left on earth with what he had left by all external standards, but lost the most valuable thing.
In the salon, Elena hugged the children to her. The little daughter quietly asked if her mother was happy. Elena smiled and replied that yes, she was really happy now.
