My daughter screamed that it wasn’t her brother —the discovery shocked us a few days later.

My daughter has been preparing for the arrival of her younger brother for several months. But just a few hours after giving birth, she looked at the baby and screamed that it wasn’t her brother. At first, I thought she was just too excited. After a few days, the truth came out accurately and left no doubt.

When I was brought to the ward after the operation, I had our son in my arms. Josh stood next to her, carefully adjusting the blanket. Elaine entered the room with that beaming smile she had had for the past few months, but she noticeably froze at the door. She came closer, looked at the baby and abruptly retreated, saying that this was not our Bob. Tired and annoyed, I pushed her away, believing that she needed time to get used to it. She left, and we thought that things would get better over time.

On the second day, she sat at the table and did not look towards the cradle. On the third day, she stood at the door of the nursery and could not enter. It no longer seemed to me that it was just a whim. Sometimes I noticed her studying the baby intently, and it looked alarmingly different. Two days later, she came up to me in the hallway, put her hand on my wrist and showed me a photo she had taken at the cradle while I was undergoing surgery. The photo showed a small semicircular dark spot under his left ear and a slightly bent little finger on his right hand.

I looked at the baby I had received home and saw neither the mark nor the special position of the finger. Fear gripped me. We returned to the hospital and demanded to check the medical records and bracelets. The employee called the head nurse and found a discrepancy in the time of birth and possible confusion in labeling. It turned out that another boy was born in one wing that night, just seventeen minutes later, and the other child had been discharged four days earlier.

We found out the address of that family and went to them. The woman opened the door with the baby on her shoulder, tired and confused. The mark under her ear and the crooked little finger were clearly visible on her son. No one started with accusations, we sat down and calmly compared photos, notes and memories. Both parents felt that something was wrong with their children from the moment they returned home.

In the evening, both families agreed on a genetic test. Five days later, the results confirmed our fears — the children were confused at the hospital. The exchange was orderly and peaceful. When I held my real son for the first time, everything fell into place inside, and the long-awaited calm returned.

The maternity hospital has initiated an official investigation and registration of relevant documents. We didn’t face any animosity with any family, only with fatigue and relief that the truth had been revealed. Elaine turned out to be the most attentive of all and noticed the difference before the others, her observation helped us return the child.

Some children come into this world already watching us, and sometimes it’s important to just listen to their signals. In the end, we were together, and the truth was restored.
