A photograph of a small kitten taken by photographer Graham Lavery went viral on the internet and caused a wave of outrage around the world. The photo shows an emaciated kitten clinging to the leg of a passerby, as if begging for help. The image instantly became a symbol of vulnerability, and social media users began demanding explanations from the author.
As it turned out, Lavery took the photo during a severe flood in Hoi An, Vietnam. While the water flooded the streets and people fought for their property and lives, the photo rapidly gained popularity, becoming a viral sensation. But instead of praise, Lavery faced harsh criticism: animal rights activists and concerned citizens condemned him for choosing to take a photo instead of helping the small creature.
The photographer himself tried to justify himself, explaining that he and his colleague had decided “not to interfere with the natural course of events.” He also referred to the cultural characteristics of the region, where attitudes toward pets differ from those in the West. According to him, thousands of people were affected by the flood, and it was they, not the kitten, who needed help first and foremost. However, such statements only intensified the wave of indignation.
Today, it remains unknown what happened to the kitten after the photographer left. But for many, it has already become a symbol of the very choice we make every day: to walk by or to lend a helping hand. We can only hope that someone kind did save this little one.
