Björn Andresen, the Swedish actor who became world famous for his role as Tadzio in the 1971 film Death in Venice, has passed away at the age of 70. His debut in this film, where he played a young man who became the object of the protagonist’s obsession, earned him the nickname ”The Most Beautiful Boy in the world.”However, as Andresen himself later admitted, this title and the experience of working with director Luchino Visconti had a deeply negative impact on him, which haunted him throughout his life.

Born in Stockholm, Andresen began his career as an actor and model at the insistence of his grandmother after the early loss of his mother. His role in death in Venice made him an instant star, but the filming process and subsequent attention proved traumatic for him. He talked about the discomfort he felt when Visconti took him to events where he felt awkward. After the success of the film, Andresen moved to Japan, where he became a popular music star and model, but his true ambitions have always been in the field of music.

Although Andresen continued to act in films and on television, he often described his career as ”chaos”, feeling that Tadzio’s role haunted him. Over time, he found some peace, especially in later roles, such as starring in the horror film Solstice, where he humorously remarked that ”dying in a horror movie is every boy’s dream.”

The actor’s personal life was also overshadowed by tragedy — the death of his young son from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Andresen left behind a daughter, Robin. His life, marked by both early triumph and deep personal difficulties, was reflected in the 2021 documentary ”The Most Beautiful Boy in the world”.”
