When height is not the main thing: a touching encounter between the world’s shortest and tallest women

30-year-old Joti Amge, recognized as the shortest woman on the planet (62.8 cm), and 27-year-old Rumeisa Gelgi, the tallest woman (215.16 cm), met for tea at the Savoy Hotel in London, where both were recognized as icons of the Guinness Book of Records. Their appearance attracted attention not only because of the contrast in height, but also because these two women shared their life stories and the difficulties they face on a daily basis.

Jyoti said that her house is fully adapted for small growth, and sometimes she needs the help of her family to leave the house — habitual household activities require support. Her translator emphasized that in everyday life everything is arranged so that she can reach the right things, but the help of loved ones is still necessary. Rumeisa, who has been diagnosed with Weaver’s syndrome, a rare disease that causes rapid growth and skeletal disorders, uses a wheelchair and can only stand with support for a short time, but remains purposeful.

The most viral moment of the meeting was the unexpected contrast of voices: Rumeisa has a deep and resonant timbre, while Jyoti’s voice turned out to be quite high. Viewers and netizens were fascinated by this contrast, discussing how the body and the structure of the vocal organs can affect the sound of the voice, and wondering how the voice can sometimes “assume” the height of a person.

Both women were included in the special anniversary edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for their 70th anniversary, along with other outstanding record holders.
