In South Africa, a rare pink elephant calf was photographed, striking with its unusual coloration.

A rare pink-colored albino elephant calf has been spotted in South Africa’s Kruger National Park, according to LiveScience. According to park ranger Theo Potgieter, such cases occur in wild animals approximately once in every 10,000 individuals.

Albinism occurs when both parents pass on a recessive mutated gene to their offspring that blocks the production of melanin, the substance responsible for skin, hair, and eye color. Because of this, albino animals often suffer from vision problems, become visible to predators, and are often expelled from the herd.

However, the little park resident was lucky: his family did not turn away from the unusual baby. On the contrary, the adult elephants surrounded him with care and try to protect him from possible dangers.
