I lived in a quiet neighborhood where all the neighbors knew each other.
So when a new family moved into the house across the street a few months ago, I tried to be friendly. They seemed a little withdrawn, but I didn’t think much of it.
The only person I occasionally saw in the yard was their son-a quiet boy of about ten.
One night I noticed something strange.
I was sitting in the kitchen looking out the window when I saw the lights on and off in the boy’s room.
At first I thought he was just playing.
But after a few seconds the light flashed again.
And again.
Briefly.
Briefly.
Briefly.
Then long flashes.
My heart suddenly began to beat faster.
I once read about the SOS signal, which is transmitted by short and long flashes of light. It is an international distress signal used to request assistance.
I kept looking.
The light repeated the same sequence again.
That’s when I realized it wasn’t an accident.
I tried to convince myself that maybe the boy was just playing with the lamp. But something inside told me it was more serious.
The next day I decided to go to the neighbor’s House.
I knocked on the door, but no one answered.
When I was about to leave, I accidentally looked up at the window on the second floor.
The boy stood there.
He looked straight at me.
And the light began to flash again.
Briefly.
Briefly.
Briefly.
It is long.
It is long.
It is long.
I didn’t doubt it anymore.
I came home and called the police.
When the officers came and knocked on the door of the neighbor’s house, no one answered again. Then they walked around the house and noticed that the back door was slightly ajar.
What they found inside silenced everyone.
The boy was really alone in the House. His parents left a few days ago, leaving him locked up so that he ”wouldn’t get into trouble.”The food was almost gone, and the phone was dead.
He remembered how they used to talk about the SOS signal at school.
And I decided to try to serve it through the window.
The police helped the boy, and later his parents were brought to justice.
When it was over, one of the officers told me:
– If you had ignored this signal, everything could have ended much worse.
Sometimes we think that strange things are just coincidences.
But sometimes an attentive neighbor can literally save a child’s life.
