I was a young mother when I found out I was expecting twins. There has never been anything more frightening and joyful in my life. Imagine: two little people who will be born at the same time.
As soon as the boys were born, my life became a constant concern: feeding, changing diapers, sleepless nights. The father of the children hardly participated-at first he said that he loved us, but soon he began to disappear from our lives. As a result, I was left alone, with two children in my arms.
Many people told me that it would be too difficult, that I would not cope. But I loved my sons with all my heart and I decided that I could do it.
The years passed quickly. My boys grew up healthy, happy and curious. They were everything to me-my family, my meaning, my pride.
I gave them everything I could: love, care, patience and support in everything. Sometimes it was incredibly difficult, but the belief that family was the most important thing always helped me.
Over time, the eldest of the Twins, my son Jake, grew up to be an independent and confident young man. One day my adult daughter Lily called me. She said she wanted to sit down and talk to me frankly.
We met, and then she said something I never expected to hear.:
– Mom, I know who our father is.
At first I thought it was a joke, but her eyes were full of determination.
It turned out that everything I knew about my family’s past was only part of the truth. What I was once told about the man who left our lives was not exactly what really happened.
Lily said that she had learned from relatives a secret that had been kept in the shadows for many years. We found out that the man, who, as it seemed to me, had lost interest in our family forever, actually tried to help, but got into a difficult situation, because of which he was forced to stay away.
Her words were hard for me at first. I felt relieved, angry and confused.
But, having understood everything in more detail, I realized one important thing.:
sometimes the past is much more complicated than it seems at first glance.
The truth does not come out when we seek it, but when we are ready for it.
