The 2017 video resurfaced on the internet, in which Cher and rapper Futcher perform a remix of the song Everyday People For The Gap brand’s campaign. The clip was revived by a meme account and garnered a storm of derision: many users described it as “the worst duet” and joked that those who organised the collaboration should be fired – while some were even angered by the sound of the auto-tune to Futcher.

In the original video, the performers sit on steps in a minimalist white space, where Cher takes over the main vocal part, while Fucher introduces short rap and conversational snippets. At the time, Cher herself had explained that she chose this song out of musical sympathy, while Futcher had noted that the campaign aimed to unite different cultures through music and style.

The viral spread of the clip coincided with discussion of Cher’s recent embarrassment at the Grammy ceremony: after being awarded the award for her contribution to music, she was forced to return to the stage, and when announcing the winner in the “record of the Year” category she accidentally mentioned the deceased Luther Vandross instead of Kendrick Lamar (the winner’s song was called “Luther”). Users on social media linked both events and continued to mock the controversial collaboration and stage accident.
