In 2011, 65-year-old Maurice Desjardins experienced a tragedy that turned his life upside down. While hunting, he was accidentally shot and suffered severe injuries to his face, destroying his bones, skin, nose, mouth, nerves, and teeth. His appearance changed beyond recognition, and it was impossible to restore the tissue using conventional methods.

His wife Gaëtan became his rock: she quit her job and spent many years caring for her husband, who could neither speak, eat, nor breathe normally. Maurice said that he “lived without a face for seven years,” and only a tracheostomy helped him survive. He spent three of those years waiting for a transplant.

In 2018, Desjardins finally underwent a unique face transplant operation under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Borsuk. The surgeon honestly warned the patient about the risks, to which Maurice replied, “Is this life?” He was willing to risk everything just to regain his human appearance.

Today, although Maurice’s speech remains impaired, he has regained what matters most: his face, his identity, and his hope. After many years of suffering, he can once again look in the mirror and see not pain, but a future.
