Nature has proven once again that she has no equal when it comes to unexpected friendships. Meteorologists found a barely alive baby seal on the icy shore of Lake Baikal, frozen, weak, clinging to life. The baby was taken to the station and given the name Umka.
But the main miracle was Nick’s dog. When she saw the baby seal, she immediately accepted it as her own: she warmed it, licked it and did not take a step away, as if she were protecting her own puppy. While the staff fed Umka fish in a tub filled with water, Nika stood nearby, vigilantly guarding the new “son.”
Over time, the seal got stronger, but parting was not easy — Umka circled the shore for three more days, not daring to swim away from his savior. When he finally left, Nika felt the separation hard, but soon she found herself caring again — she began to nurse the goats at the station.
