Lost cubs find their way home: a touching reunion between a mother leopard and her babies

Two small leopard cubs were found in a sugar cane field, frightened and calling for their mother. Their loud cries disturbed the plantation workers, who realized that the cubs had lost their mother and would not survive without help. The workers contacted Wildlife SOS, an organization that rescues and rehabilitates wild animals.

The tiny cubs, one male and one female, were six weeks old when they were found by sugarcane farmers in Nirgude Village, Maharashtra, India on January 2

Specialists quickly arrived at the scene and took the cubs to a leopard rescue center. Veterinarians examined the cubs and fortunately determined that they were completely healthy. To help the family reunite, the center’s staff decided to return the cubs to where they were found. After carefully placing the cubs in a basket, the team set up a hidden camera and began to observe from a distance.

It is not uncommon for farmers to see young leopard cubs in sugarcane fields in Maharashtra

A few hours later, the mother leopard appeared in the lens. Approaching cautiously, she caught a familiar scent and realized that these were her cubs. Without wasting any time, she pulled out the basket and gently took out the cubs. The family was reunited, and the story ended as it should — happily.

The tall, dense sugarcane stalks provide adequate cover for the leopards but their cubs are often seen and found by people working in the fields
