She found an envelope marked “Open when things get tough” — and after reading it, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

After her husband’s death, Sarah couldn’t even bring herself to enter his study for a long time.
Everything there remained as he had left it that day—a cup of half-drunk coffee, an open book, an old radio on the shelf.

Six months later, she finally decided to tidy up… and found a small envelope hidden under the desk.
It said:

“Open when things get really tough.”
She thought she couldn’t handle it — her hands were shaking, tears were streaming down her face.
But when she read what he had left inside… even the neighbors couldn’t hold back their tears. 😢

For six months, Sarah didn’t go into his office.
After the funeral, she just closed the door — she couldn’t look at his things, couldn’t hear the silence that once echoed with his voice.

One evening, as the rain drummed on the window, she finally made up her mind.
Every item was steeped in memories: an old mug, his glasses, a pencil with a chewed-off end.

Under the table where he usually repaired his watches, Sarah noticed an envelope.
It was yellowed, with his handwriting on it.
It read:

“Open when things get really tough.”

She sat there for a long time, staring at those words, unable to take the first step.
Then she carefully tore open the edge.

Inside was a single letter.

“If you’re reading this, it means I’m no longer here.

But I want you to know: I haven’t gone away completely.
Every sunrise you see is me.
Every warm breeze is my ‘hello’.

And if it becomes unbearable, just put the kettle on, open the window, and call me.
I’m always nearby.

Yours, Michael.”

Sarah cried for a long time. But for the first time in months, she cried without fear or pain.
In the morning, she made coffee as usual, opened the window, and whispered:
“Good morning, Michael.”

From that day on, the cup on the table was never empty again.
