His reputation was severely damaged following a series of sexual harassment allegations that began in 2017, leading to his dismissal from House of Cards and a near-total hiatus in his career. However, courts in both the United States and the United Kingdom later dropped all criminal charges against him, although a civil action was again brought against the actor in London in 2025.

Despite the scandals, Spacey unexpectedly received a wave of support. Friends and colleagues, including Sharon Stone and Liam Neeson, publicly stated that they consider the actor’s return to the film industry to be the right decision. At the same time, Anthony Rapp, who was the first to accuse Spacey, pointed out that he understands why it is difficult for many victims to seek justice through the courts.
