Robert Wadlow’s story still amazes doctors and ordinary people alike. At just six years old, the boy was already as tall as an adult, standing at 1.70 m. By the age of sixteen, his figure had become truly legendary: 2.44 m, and his body continued to grow as if it had no intention of stopping. At the same time, Robert’s family was quite ordinary — no one even suspected that a future record holder was growing up in their home.

The reason for his incredible growth was a rare diagnosis — pituitary gigantism, which caused his body to produce abnormally high levels of growth hormone. Today, such conditions can often be controlled with medication, but at the beginning of the 20th century, medicine was powerless. Despite constant pain, fatigue, and the undisguised attention of the crowds, Robert became famous for his incredible kindness and gentle nature. His enormous shoes — size 93! — became the main cause for admiring sighs.

However, his tall stature came at a terrible price. To ease the strain a little, he wore a metal brace that rubbed his feet, but due to nerve problems, Robert felt no pain. One day, the person who usually checked the condition of his feet was not around. An unnoticed wound instantly turned into a serious infection.

It was this infection that cut short the life of the “gentle giant.” Just a week after becoming infected, Robert died of sepsis at the age of 22. By that time, he had reached an incredible 2.72 meters — a record that no one has been able to beat to this day.
