My teenager came home with two newborns and discovered the truth, which I was not ready for.

When he entered the apartment with two tiny bundles in his arms, it seemed as if time had stopped. My son Josh, then sixteen years old, looked scared and determined at the same time. He said he couldn’t leave these children.

My name is Margaret, I am 43 years old. After a difficult divorce, the past five years have been a struggle for survival. Husband Derek left, leaving Josh and me alone, and we were barely making ends meet in our small two-room apartment next to Mercy General Hospital. Josh has always been my rock, and his quiet hope for his father’s return hurt me.

That day, while folding the laundry, I heard unusual footsteps and his call. He kept two newborns in his room: a boy and a girl. Josh explained that he had taken a friend to the hospital, and there he saw Derek. Through the staff, he found out that a girl named Sylvia had given birth to twins, she developed complications, and Derek, having learned about the children, left. Sylvia was alone and crying, so she temporarily arranged for Josh to receive the babies, and the nurse vouched for him.

My heart squeezed in shock. Josh insisted that they were his brother and sister, and he couldn’t leave them in the room. At first, I insisted on returning the children to the hospital, but when they saw Sylvia in room 314, she looked even worse, pale and on an IV drip, indicating possible complications and fear for the future of the babies. She asked for help and called the children family.

I called Derek. He reacted coldly and said that it was a mistake, and soon came with a lawyer, signed the papers and stated that he would not take any obligations. His words and indifference were like a blow.

After a while, we got custody. Josh has grown beyond his years during this time. He gave up football, partly from friends and other plans, but every night he takes care of babies, reads them fairy tales in funny voices and watches at every rustle. Laila and Liam grew up, learned to walk, and filled our apartment with noise and laughter.

We get tired, sometimes we doubt the choice, but the sight of Lila laughing at something simple and Liam grabbing Josh’s hand gives us confidence back. Josh once said he wouldn’t be like Derek, and he kept his word.

Now there are four of us again. We’re not perfect, but we’re together. This year has shown that the family is not always built according to plan, sometimes it is created by actions and willingness to help. Josh didn’t leave his loved ones, he saved them and eventually saved us.
