My daughter married a man who bullied me at school—but at the wedding I revealed the truth, which he hoped I would forget.

When my daughter first told me that she had introduced us to her fiancé, I was happy for her. She looked in love, and her voice literally shone with joy.

But the moment I saw him on our doorstep… my hands went cold.

I recognized that face.

He recognized me too, and for a second his smile disappeared.

He was the guy who made my school years a nightmare.

In high school, he and his friends constantly bullied me. They laughed at my clothes, hid my things, spread rumors and did everything to humiliate me in front of other students.

I tried to forget it when I grew up. But as soon as I saw him again, all the memories returned.

My daughter knew nothing.

To her, he was caring, attentive, and the perfect man. And to be honest, he really seemed like a different person.

One day I plucked up the courage and asked him directly.:

“Do you remember who I am?”

He lowered his eyes.

– Yes … – he answered softly.

He said that many years ago he was a stupid teenager and that he is still ashamed of how he treated me. He even tried to apologize, but I didn’t know if I could just forget everything I had been through.

When the wedding day came, I sat among the guests and watched my daughter walk down the aisle.

At that moment I realized that
this was no longer a story about the past.
This is a story about her future.

During the toast, I got up and said a few words.

I told her about what kind of person my daughter was-kind, strong and honest. And then I looked at her hubby and said:

“I’ve known you longer than she thinks.

The hall became quiet.

I told him about how we met many years ago at school and what kind of person he was then.

But then I said something that no one expected.:

– People can change. And if my daughter chose you, she saw in you the person you have become.

He stood in front of me with his eyes full of tears.

After the ceremony, he came up to me and said softly:

– Thanks for the second chance.”

I do not know if it is possible to completely erase the past.

But sometimes life takes an unexpected turn and forces us to face those who once caused pain.

And sometimes the only way to move forward is to give people the opportunity to become better.
