The fire broke out early in the morning in a small suburb of Chicago.
A family of four managed to run outside, but when the mother counted everyone, her youngest daughter was missing.
The girl, three-year-old Ellie, was sleeping in the nursery, which was already filled with smoke.
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
The flames engulfed the roof, and smoke billowed from the windows.
Suddenly, a German shepherd named Max rushed out of the house.
He was covered in soot, his eyes red from the smoke.
People thought he had escaped.
But a second later, Max turned and ran back into the house, despite the screams and heat.
The firefighters rushed after him.
In the nursery, under the bed, they found Max lying on top of Ellie, covering her with his body.
She was unconscious but alive.
Max wasn’t moving.
He had managed to save her, but had inhaled too much smoke himself.
